Photographica Gallery
I come across a good amount of photographica, from early images such as ambrotypes right up to modern snapshots, but am especially drawn to old newspaper file photos. These glossy pictures average 8" by 10" in size, and were usually shot by professional photographers for local newspapers or wire services such as the Associated Press and International News Photos. They were then distributed to various newspapers for publication. There is usually a taped caption on the reverse printed on flimsy, browning paper. It includes a title (not mandatory for the newspaper to utilize, and often corny), a description of the image, an occasional editorial comment, and the date it was taken. The name and logo of the service which distributed the photo is usually stamped in ink underneath the paper caption. Needless to say, there are many variations to this format. These are original photos in the sense that they do date from the period in question, but they are not one-of-a-kind originals. On the other hand, many have been discarded over the years, so they are fairly unique. Besides giving us a wonderful record of the past, these images are richly printed, with great halftones and subtleties which seem to be imparted best through the art of black and white photography. The old cameras, processes, and printing paper have combined with patina to enhance these enjoyable, informative artifacts.
Some are offered here under "Photos for Sale," and there are other pages of not-for-sale "Archival Photos" which I have kept or sold, locally or online.
This part of the website is still under construction, as they say, and won't be fully developed for some time.
